In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), researchers concluded that regular use of a sauna can reduce the occurrence of sudden cardiac death (SCD), fatal coronary heart disease (CHD), and fatal cardiovascular disease (CVD). All of these conditions frequently lead to death.
The research was conducted in Finland on 2,300 men over the period of 20 years.
Death from the above heart related conditions was reported to be double in men that did not use a sauna on a regular basis.
According to the UK publication, The Daily Mail, Dr Rita Redberg the chief editor at the JAMA, commented:
Although we do not know why the men who took saunas more frequently had greater longevity (whether it is the time spent in the hot room, the relaxation time, the leisure of a life that allows for more relaxation time, or the camaraderie of the sauna), clearly time spent in the sauna is time well spent.
It is interesting to note that Dr Redberg suggested the beneficial elements of sauna use could be related to heat, relaxation time, camaraderie, or simply a lifestyle that makes time for leisure activities.
